Next best thing to diplomatic immunity.
I have had mine for 2 years now and wouldnt consider another after owning it. It is a little information rich which takes getting accustomed to but one of the unique features - direction - is amazingly useful in a multi-radar situation.

I went through the same thing you are going through now and the only two that seam (my informal poll based upon reading way too many post) worth the further investigation are the Valentine V-1 and the Escort Passport 8500.
I went with the V-1 because it was the overwhelming choice by fellow enthusiasts. Now I've only had it for about two weeks and I'm still getting use to it. Right now I'm using it in the all alarm mode (1 of 4) and I get lots of false signals. If there are others out there that have used it before I'd love to know what modes you are running and where.
BTW, what's up with those orange portable signs on the highway? (about 4 on the pike) They all seam to have radars or at least a radar producing signal generator. I was on 95 up in Maine on Sat and they have one that feeds back to the sign and it tells you "Slow down, you are exceeded the posted limit"

Those signs are a pain in the ass! I have had great luck with my Bel 980. I have found that it and the V1 are the best. I went with the 980 because of its size and the fact that I had no intention of hard wiring it.
check out radartest.com
There is an interesting review on there.

Husky,
Don't know about your Bel but I can't tell you how easy it is to hard wire the V-1. I was skeptical at first but Toy-Guy convinced me how easy it was and I have to say it was a piece of cake. The V-1 comes with everything you need (Buy it direct since e-bay cost as much if not more). enpassant if you end up with a V-1 I'll point you in the right direction for a nice install.
BTW, how was the visit from your DC crowd. I was dragging asz on Friday.

If there are others out there that have used it before I'd love to know what modes you are running and where. I run the Advanced-Logic mode all the time. It screens out a lot of the junk in the X-band, but not all since it is hard for it to tell an X-band radar at a distance from some X-band commercial controls that are close by. I generally commute the same route and time each day so I am used to the X and K band commercial stuff and it almost doesnt register with me. I didnt shut off X band because it is still in use in some of the local communities here like Wellesley.

V-1 hands down. I used to have a passport, but once you have those arrows, it's impossible to go back. I keep mine in advanced logic mode all the time. Hard-wiring it literally took about 30 minutes.
Take this situation: Highway sign putting out K-band along your usual commute. Statie sitting right under it with K-band.
every other radar detector: K band screaming. You keep going because you *know* that it's the sign. nailed.
V-1: bogey counter shows 2. you know that the sign puts out a signal, but you also know that there's something else. so you slow down and save your ass. 8)

Of course I say go with the V1 without any question.
I can set you up with a custom built-in remote display and remote mute switch to make it even nicer, and I'm working on a quick connect mount also, with the electrical connections built in.
