I know your out there. Need some help,
Thinking about a trip to Portugal this summer. Have a GF that will be over there at the end of August. I'm thinking about 10 days. I'd like to have a mixture of relaxing beach time and country sightseeing. Mix in some nice wine, food, etc.
My first thought is to start in Lisbon and make my way south along the Atlantic coast. Spend a couple of days in the Algarve then work my way back up the interior. However, I've also heard nice things about the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Should I just extend the trip up to Barcelona?
Please fill me in with whatever details you guys might have. If you know of any other sources of good info I'd appreciate that as well.

I'm going there in May, and hence am an honorary member of the BAG Portuguese club ;D
We are going to visit Lisbon, Porto, Madeira and a few small towns inland as well.
You want to speak with nene, S4toXR8ted, or benfica09. The "real" Portuguese guys.

I think you have the right idea starting in Lisbon and going to Algarve. Although there isn't a whole lot to see unless you take the coastal rt.(which is much longer..IN20?) I think IP1 is the major highway down to there now? Can't remember. If you want to see alot of the old country side there is more to see up north. In the provinces of Minho and Tras os Montes.
Algarve is abst. beautiful!! Excellent beachs, and the cliffs are amazing.
If you get a chance, Porto is also a great city with alot of old history.
About going to Spain.....about 6-7yrs. ago I went w/my entrire family out there to Benidor. The island of Ibiza is straight east of Benidor. I do know if you plan on making that trip by car from Algarve to Barcelona, its is very very long! Its over a 10hr drive because it took us 10 to get to Benidor, which is south of Barcelona. At any rate....it will be a great trip!!
Where in Algarve do you plan on staying? I know Faro is a great spot, also Albufiera is another great place to be.
let me know....sorry for the long reply

How are you picking the places to stay? I've just started the whole internet search but haven't had a whole lot of luck. Plus I'd rather get info from somebody who's been.

We have a travel agent...she and my wife handle it mostly. My wife loves to plan trips, and I love to be surprised. If you are looking for an agent, I can give you her name. She is near Hartford CT where I used to live. Are you making your own plans or are you using someone to help out? How are you picking the places to stay? I've just started the whole internet search but haven't had a whole lot of luck. Plus I'd rather get info from somebody who's been.

let me know....sorry for the long reply Benfica, No need to be sorry. that's exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for. All I'm doing right now is trying to get a rough idea of where we want to be. She's overseas all summer for school and we’re planning on meeting up when she's done. Just trying to figure out if we should fly in and out of Lisbon or in Lisbon and out of someplace in Spain. She has to make her final reservations soon because she's leaving in about a month. I'm thinking Lisbon for a few days, quick bus down to Praia Da Falesia, da Rocha or anywhere around Albufeira, then up through the heart and back to Lisbon. I'd love to find "wine country" if that exist. But like I said I'm just getting into it now. I'm planning on mixing it up with some nights at some of the bigger hotels and hopefully a couple of bed and breakfast type places if I can find them. So please if you have any more suggestions keep them coming. Thanks

...can I be an honorary Port? Honorary by association? ;D Orale! Vatos loco siempre!!! 8) you're too funny man! And Ringo....if you want a good wine area, visit Porto! They have a this strip of winery's(sp?) along the port. Its very cool. Almost all of Portugal has its sections of wine districts. Big wine drinkers in Portugal. I wish I had a better knowledge of the areas to go to around Lisbon. I don't know many places to go out to down south though. My parents both grew up in Chaves, one of the most northern cities in the country. Up in the mountains. But I think S4toXR8ted is from the Lisbon area. He should know. come on you other portugueses, you guys probablly know more than me!

Chalk me up for likeing the south - Faro, etc. Nancy & I did a trip there just after we finished our MBAs and had a riot. We started in Casablanca, Morocco and went across the straight of Gibraltar to Algiceras Spain. Then we spent a few weeks driving around.
On the other hand, Barcelona is amazing. But if you really want to party you need to go to the spanish islands off Denia on the Med coast.
