My wife is looking at cars to replace her current lease and she likes the Jeep Liberty (Keep it to yourself, please) and we test drove one on Saturday at Miday in Framingham. Their first offer on the car was w/i $500 of invoice wa free extended 7yr 100K warranty if I buy by the 28th. I didn't counter offer b/c we wanted to drive a few different cars, however, for a first offer, it seems as though they may have really "dropped their pants." Thoughts?
Also, is it unreasonable to ask for the car below invoice and do you guys know anywhere to find out what people are paying for the car?
BTW, we are also looking at A4's but she likes the room of a truck.
Thanks!!

Hey you can ask for anything you want. Great thing about being a consumer. The person who is willing to fight and bitch the most will get the best deal. Trust me, I know how it works..
In this economy and market, they will try to get the best deal they can, or at least even the sale. Car sales are not doing that well. I would ask for everything you can. Its your money, so its up to you how much you are willing to spend.

i agree, ask for anything you want! however, it doesn't make good business sense to sell below invoice UNLESS its costing more to maintan their stock then then to get rid of it...which i would think would be a rare situation. who knows? maybe the salesmen's incentives are done per sale, regardless of price...

So,...Josh what is this I hear about your knowing how to "impregnate dogs"? I think that is a post wanting to be moderated...wait a second...you are a moderator...that's why! Just kidding.
On a different note, I may need your networking expertise for a second, and willing to pay for it... Shouldn't be more then a 30-60 minute job, and I pay ca$h! I'll send email.

for $100 over invoice minus the $400 college discount (wife is getting her master's), therefore under invoice. This was at Clair, though, where we have also bought the S4 and our Boxster. We were considering upgrading to a Liberty, so we went in this weekend and they said $100 over invoice again. Seems like the Jeep dealers are trying to reduce inventory (they had 50 on the lot), so you could push. But IMO, you are getting a good deal already. And did they offer you the warranty extension?

"Invoice" means different things to different manufacturers. Depending on how their pricing and incentive structure is setup, it can be possible to sell a car below "invoice" and still turn a profit. Subaru is like this. Don't know if Chrysler is.
Also, is that warranty extension really an extension? The recent TV ads make it appear as though it is standard. You may want to clarify that with the salesman before purchasing.

and they did offer the warranty extension. My salesperson was Rob Gilmore. BTW, we decided to keep the Wrangler (because it's more fun and who needs practicality in a third car), though the Liberty is a much better value. Clair Audi (next door) has a gorgeous 2002 A4 Avant in the showroom, so make sure to take the wife over there too. Cool, did you look at Clair Jeep? And did they offer you the warranty extension?
