OK...I knew it was good, but I didn't know how good. We have a few awd/4wd vehicles (yeah, so I have a fetish) and I took one of our S4's out for the first time in the snow the other night. All I can say is that the quattro system is incredible and blows away any AWD/4WD system I have ever driven with...at least on the road. I could floor it and it would slip some, but it was really controllable and straight. Even when I was playing around in an uncleared parking lot with 2 inches of snow, it handled great. I could get it to slide some, but the ESP really kept the thing in line. I had a bit more fun with the ESP off, but I can't believe how good it is with it on. I don't think I will ever be without an Audi from now on!!!
I am really looking forward to my wife going away next week so I can drive her Avant all week. It was so good in the snow, I am even considering using my sedan over the winter...I know you probably think I'm crazy for NOT driving it, but it is so pretty, I just can't stomach getting it all mucked up and salty...yet...

Except on Winter driving. I felt the same way for about a month, and then I figured if it gets dirty, I'll clean it. I'm all for spending as much time with the car as possible. Any excuse will do.

This is my first winter as well.. Blows anything Ive driven away as well..
I had a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder last year, and this year I got the Audi.. Must say night and day. The audi feels so strong in the snow. I love going WOT in the snow, so much fun!!!!

I am almost convinced. I am on the verge of pulling the sedan out of winter storage and driving it down to get winter tires on it. That would be a good excuse to get 18" wheels come spring! I know this has been covered many times on AudiWorld and probably here too, but what is the latest, local rcommendation on winter tires? We have the Michelin Pilot Alpins on the Avant. They seem pretty good. I went with the Pilot Alpins because I was told they are one of the best for dry pavement which is what you end up driving on around here most of the time anyway, not deep stuff. These cars are so low, you can't drive in deep stuff anyway. I would take our CR-V or Ford Ranger in the deep stuff. I would be using the S4 for my 60 mile a day to/from work, mostly on highways commute and of course for fun rides and Audi GTGs. Thanks for any recommendations in advance. -Jim

...I highly recommend the Dunlop WinterSport M2s. They are awesome. And if you drive in smaller roads or roads with lots of snow, the Artic Alpins not Pilots are very good as well as the Nokians.
I personally don't drive many harsh roads so I went with the WinterSport M2s and they are really good.

Could not agree with S4madman more...
I have driven on both of those tires. I have the Artics and he has the Winter Sports.
I got the Artics cause they are more aggressive in the snow, because I plan on going to the mountains quite a bit to go riding.
But for an excellent performer and street tire/snow tire the Winter Sports are awesome!! Combined with a decent snow tire, the audi quattro can't be stopped.
