I hooked into a really great networking and contacts group called "W.I.N.D" ( Wednesday Is Networking Day). They meet once a week and exchanging information about employers who are hiring, contacts at different companies, etc. I went last week to the meeting in Wilmington and there were about 300 people. I asked if anyone had information or contacts at three or four companies I am looking at and got about 15 responses. Finding a job these days is all about knowing someone on the "inside" and this group is a great way to get that info. Check out their web site at: www.windnetworking.com/

What sorts of jobs are there? What fields are the contacts in?

There are people from just about all fields...sales, marketing, operations, engineering (hardware & software), IT (technical & management), etc. You name it, there are people there with good contacts in those areas. I went again this past week and got another dozen or so contacts at companies I'm interested in plus I got leads on 4 or 5 jobs I wasn't previously aware of. I also got some good info on web resources that I didn't know about. For example, half the problem is finding contacts at particular companies but the other half is finding out which companies you're interested in. This could be by function, geographic region, emerging fields, etc. Someone pointed me to www.devenscommunity.com/ which is a site that lists all the companies that are going in at the old Fort Devens area. This would be a good geographic region for me. Now I can do some research into these companies and see if I can find contacts at any of them. It's a lot of legwork, but that's the only way to land a job these days.
